What Are PLA and PETG Made Of?

That is a gap of only a few percent. Brand and grade matter far more than material family: Prusament's own PLA measures 51 MPa, beating their PETG at 47 MPa, and eSUN PLA+ reaches 63 MPa.

PLA is also the stiffer material, with a median flexural modulus around 2,640 MPa compared to roughly 2,000 MPa for PETG. A PLA bracket holds its shape under load better than a PETG one. So where does PETG earn its reputation? In how the two materials fail. PLA is brittle. Independent destructive testing by CNC Kitchen found PLA's layer adhesion running roughly 50% below its bulk strength, and when a PLA part lets go, it snaps suddenly with no warning. PETG stretches before it fails, absorbs impact energy, and forms more reliable bonds between layers.

Durability over time widens the gap further. PLA slowly embrittles with age, sunlight, and humidity. PETG resists water, most household chemicals, and keeps its toughness for years in conditions that would wreck a PLA part. The honest summary: for a rigid part under steady indoor load, PLA is genuinely strong. For anything that gets dropped, flexed, soaked, or left outside, PETG's durability wins every time.

Temperature Resistance and Outdoor Use

Temperature resistance is where the two materials separate most clearly, and it is the spec beginners most often ignore until a part fails. PLA begins to soften at just 50 to 60°C. PETG holds its shape to roughly 70 to 80°C. Those numbers sound abstract until you translate them into real environments. A parked car interior in summer reaches 60 to 80°C, enough to warp any PLA part left on the dashboard. Even a sunny windowsill in a warm climate can hit 50 to 60°C. PETG shrugs off both.

For outdoor use, PETG is the standard budget recommendation for good reason. It resists UV degradation reasonably well, and users report standard PETG parts lasting a year or longer outside before they start to stiffen, with clear grades degrading fastest. It is also highly water resistant, so rain and humidity do not weaken it. PLA behaves badly outdoors: it turns chalky, grows brittle under UV exposure, and slowly hydrolyzes in moisture, losing strength over months. Planters, garden brackets, mailbox flags, and car accessories should all be PETG. Indoor decor, desk organizers, and display pieces are safe in PLA.

Print Quality and Ease of Use

PLA earned its place as the world's most popular filament by being forgiving. It prints at 190 to 220°C, usually with no heated bed at all, warps so little that even open-frame printers handle it easily, and freezes fast under 100% part cooling. That fast freezing is exactly why PLA produces the best print quality for visual models: sharp corners, clean overhangs, tidy bridging, and crisp surface detail. It also comes in the widest range of colors and finishes, from silk and matte to wood-filled blends.

PETG asks for more work. It prints hotter, needs a 70 to 80°C bed, and is hygroscopic, meaning it absorbs moisture from the air and prints poorly until dried at around 65°C for 4 to 6 hours. It strings and oozes, so retraction settings need tuning, and part cooling should drop to 30 to 50%. It also bonds so aggressively to glass and PEI beds that it can tear chunks out of the surface, so a thin layer of glue stick acts as a release agent. The reward for that tuning is a glossy, professional finish that hides layer lines well.

PETG vs PLA Plus: Where Does PLA+ Fit?

Somewhere in your research you will run into PETG vs PLA Plus comparisons, and PLA+ deserves its own honest treatment. PLA+ is standard PLA blended with roughly 5 to 15% impact modifiers. The additives work: eSUN PLA+ posts 63 MPa tensile strength and noticeably better toughness than plain PLA, and it prints almost as easily, just 5 to 10°C hotter. For strong indoor parts with PLA-level convenience, PLA+ is a genuinely smart middle ground.

What PLA+ does not fix is the two weaknesses that define PLA. Most PLA+ grades still soften around 53 to 55°C, and the material still degrades under UV and moisture. Marketing sometimes frames PLA+ as engineering grade, but the glass transition temperature tells the truth. So the verdict is clean: PLA+ closes the toughness gap with PETG, but it does not close the heat or weather gap. Strong shelf bracket in the garage? PLA+ is fine.
