ugee Funbox 3D Printer Full Review

If you have been reading ugee Funbox reviews trying to figure out if this little enclosed machine is actually worth $299, you are in the right place. We spent three weeks printing with the Funbox in a real home, with a 7 year old and a 10 year old doing most of the work. Below you will find real print times, measured noise levels, a failure log, and an honest list of the things that impressed us and the things that annoyed us.

Quick Verdict and Specs at a Glance

Our verdict: 8.6 out of 10. Setup is genuinely fast, the safety engineering is real, and print quality is good for a machine at this size. You pay for that convenience with a small build volume and PLA only support.

Unboxing and Setup: First Print in About 10 Minutes

The box contains the printer, a spool of blue PLA, a filament holder, the power adapter, a flexible magnetic base plate, pliers, a cleaning needle, a pneumatic fitting, a calibration card, a quick guide, and a sheet of DIY stickers. Everything has a place, and the quick guide is visual enough that our 10 year old led the setup.

We timed it. From opening the box to starting the first print took 11 minutes, and most of that was waiting for the app to download a model over Wi-Fi. There is no assembly and no bed leveling. The Funbox is leveling free, which removes the single most frustrating part of budget 3D printers. Load the filament through the fitting until it feeds, clip on the spool holder, pair the app, pick a model, tap print. That is the whole process.

For context, the last two kid-focused printers we set up took 13 minutes and 15 minutes respectively, and both needed manual leveling. If you want the full walkthrough, ugee publishes an official Funbox quick guide, but honestly you will probably not need it.

Safety Testing: Noise, Heat and Air Quality

Safety is the entire reason this printer exists, so we tested it properly instead of taking the spec sheet at face value.

Noise

ugee rates the Funbox at 46 dB. Using a phone decibel meter one meter from the printer during a normal print, we measured 46 to 48 dB on average, with a 49 dB peak during fast travel moves. That matches the claim. For reference, that is quieter than a typical conversation and noticeably quieter than the open-frame printer in our office, which measures around 55 dB. Our kids did homework at the same table while it ran, and nobody complained.

Heat and pinch protection

The print chamber is fully enclosed, and the hot components sit behind the 360° SafeShield guard. After one full hour of printing we pointed an infrared thermometer at the outer shell. The warmest spot we could find read 34 °C, barely above skin temperature. There is no way for small fingers to reach the nozzle while it is running, and the door hinges and corners are shaped to avoid pinching. We tried to find a trap point and came up empty.

Air quality

A built-in fan pulls chamber air through an H12 HEPA filter and an activated carbon layer, rated to capture up to 99.5% of particles down to 0.1 to 0.3 microns. The machine is UL GREENGUARD certified, plus it carries ASTM F963-23 and EN71 toy safety certifications, which is rare for a 3D printer at any price. In practice, we could smell a faint warm-plastic scent standing right next to it, and essentially nothing from a meter away. Since it prints PLA only, fumes were never going to be a big issue, but the filtration clearly does something. If you want a deeper dive on this topic, we have a separate guide on whether 3D printers are safe for kids.

Print Quality: Real Test Models and Print Times

Over three weeks we ran 23 prints. Twenty one succeeded. Here is the log of our standard test models, all printed with the bundled blue PLA at default settings:

Model Layer height Print time Result
Flexi Rex dinosaur 0.2 mm 42 min Clean, joints moved freely
Mini castle 0.2 mm 1 h 18 min Good detail, slight stringing on towers
Phone stand 0.28 mm 55 min Strong, smooth top surface
Custom name tag (AI generated) 0.2 mm 23 min Readable text, minor blob on one corner
Large flat coaster 0.2 mm 1 h 4 min Failed: corner lifted at the edge

Quality is genuinely good for a machine this size. Layer lines are fine and even at 0.2 mm, and the 0.05 mm minimum layer height is available if you want smoother surfaces and longer print times. The claimed 500 mm/s top speed is real but you will rarely see it on small models; typical small prints run in the 20 to 60 minute range, which is exactly right for a kid's attention span.

The two failures are worth describing. The coaster lifted at one corner, which is a classic large-flat-print problem on a room temperature bed. A brim fixed it on the retry. The second failure was a filament tangle on the spool, and here the Funbox did something impressive: it detected the tangle, paused the print, and resumed cleanly after we sorted the spool. Power-off resume also works. We pulled the plug mid-print as a test, plugged it back in, and it picked up where it stopped with no visible seam.

Print removal is excellent. The flexible magnetic plate peels off and bends, and prints pop free without tools.

The UFun App Experience

Pairing took about two minutes. The app is the control center: kids browse a model library, start prints, and check progress from a phone or tablet. ugee adds new models weekly, and after three weeks the library still had plenty our kids wanted to print. The models skew toward toys, animals, and small desk items, which is right for the audience.

The AI creative modeling feature is the flashiest part. You type a prompt or use a photo, and it generates a printable model. Our results were mixed. Simple requests like "a cat name tag for Luna" produced genuinely usable prints, including the name tag in our test table. Ambitious requests like "a dragon with spread wings" produced models that needed support cleanup or failed to slice well. Treat it as a fun bonus, not a reason to buy.

Grown-ups get the U-PRINT slicer for more control, and the printer accepts standard OBJ, STL, and Gcode files, so you are not locked into the app library. If your kids want project ideas beyond the built-in library, check our list of 3D printing STEM projects for kids.

What We Liked

  • Setup actually takes 10 minutes. No assembly, no leveling, no frustration.
  • The safety story is real. Enclosure, cool outer shell, filtration, and three separate certifications. We verified the noise claim within 2 dB.
  • Smart failure handling. Tangle detection and power-off resume both worked in our tests.
  • Tool-free nozzle swaps. The quick swap nozzle system means a clog is a two minute fix.
  • The flexible magnetic plate. Kids can remove their own prints safely.
  • It is genuinely quiet. 46 to 48 dB measured, quiet enough for a bedroom or study desk.
  • Compact and cute. At 270 x 274 x 305 mm and about 4 kg, it fits on a shelf and kids can move it themselves.

What Could Be Better

  • PLA only. The 260 °C hot end hints at more, but the machine is specified for PLA. If your kid later wants PETG or ABS, this is not the machine.
  • The build volume is small. 120 mm cubed is fine for toys and trinkets. Anything bigger has to be split into parts. Two of our kids' ideas did not fit and that was a real disappointment moment.
  • It depends on the app. There is no full touchscreen onboard for browsing models. If your household rules limit tablet time, an adult will need to drive the app.
  • AI modeling is inconsistent. Fun when it works, frustrating when it does not. Manage expectations.
  • $299 is fair but not cheap. Budget open-frame printers cost less. You are paying for the enclosure, filtration, and simplicity. For most families we think it is justified, but it is still a real price gap.

Who Should Buy the Funbox (and Who Should Skip It)

Buy it if you have kids roughly ages 6 to 14, you care about safety certifications more than raw specs, you want the first print to happen today instead of this weekend, and most of what your family will print fits in a 120 mm cube. For that family, this is the easiest recommendation in the category.

Skip it if your kid is a teen who will outgrow PLA toys quickly, you want to print large cosplay parts or functional PETG parts, or you enjoy tinkering and want an open machine to upgrade. In those cases a larger open-frame printer makes more sense and costs less.

If you do buy, current pricing and bundles are on the official ugee Funbox product page, which also lists the latest shipping windows by region.

FAQ

Is the ugee Funbox safe for kids to use alone?

With adult setup and basic ground rules, yes for most school-age kids. The chamber is fully enclosed, the shell stayed at 34 °C in our testing, and the HEPA plus carbon filtration handles particles and odor. Younger kids should still be supervised, mostly to keep them from opening the door mid-print.

What age is the Funbox best for?

We would say 6 to 14. 7 year old printed independently after three days. Teenagers who want engineering-level control will hit its limits fast.

Can the Funbox print without the app?

It accepts standard Gcode, so advanced users can slice elsewhere with U-PRINT. Day to day use is built around the UFun app, and there is no onboard screen for browsing models, so plan on a phone or tablet being part of the workflow.

How much does filament cost to run?

Standard 1 kg PLA spools run about $20 to $25. In three weeks of regular use we got through roughly 60% of one spool, so expect a few dollars of filament per week for typical family printing.

Is the Funbox worth $299?

For families prioritizing safety and simplicity, yes. You can get cheaper printers, but none we have tested combine an enclosure, certified filtration, and 10 minute setup at this price. You are paying for time saved and worry avoided.

Final Thoughts

The ugee Funbox does not try to be a pro machine, and that focus is its strength. After 23 prints, two honest failures, and three weeks of daily use by two kids, it earned its 8.6 out of 10. It is the printer we would put on our own kitchen table.
